Storytelling Devices in Interactive Documentary
Using real world examples from a sampling of interactive web-based documentaries, the panel will discuss the specific “Cinematic” and ”Digimatic” devices that makers of interactive documentary are employing to engage their viewers. Our big question is: Once you get past the interface, are people really engaging with the content of these projects in a meaningful way? We will consider ways that interactive filmmakers could more consciously exploit the unique aspects of the digital platform to engage their audiences.
Bart has been telling interactive stories for 20 years. He has extensive experience designing projects for web, touchscreen, and mobile platforms, with core expertise in museum-related content. Bart has designed dozens of award-winning projects for clients such as the Smithsonian, National Geographic, Library of Congress, National Park Service, J. Paul Getty Museum, Indianapolis Museum of Art, United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, and Lucasfilm. His work has been honored with dozens of industry awards from the Webbys, American Association of Museums (MUSE Awards), Communication Arts, ID Magazine, and Museums and the Web.

Karen Kocher has been creating "new" media since 1995. Her projects include Austin Past and Present, a digital interactive history of Austin, Zilker Trek, a mobile media scavenger hunt; and work-in-progress, Living Springs, a wed-based documentary about Barton Springs
I'm a PhD student at UT Austin researching online documentary practices (Kickstarter, open source footage, social networking sites, etc.) and the changes to documentary narrative and audience relations. I also have experience in film distribution (Facets Multimedia; Women Make Movies) and currently manage the online presence for Nancy Schiesari's film, Canine Soldiers.
