Guns of Navarone
Listen to I Bid You Farewell
Owing equally as much to Gram Parsons as The Replacements, Austin’s Guns of Navarone sing about the high and lonesome, and do so with enough whiskey-soaked bravado to convince you that they don’t spend too much time crying in their beers. There’s a punk’d-up energy and honesty that essentially mixes country-grit with indie-rock grammar. Their songs are coated with the rich, southern voice of vocalist and chief songwriter Cory Reinisch, which is beautifully supported by the angular guitar leads of Seth Grueneberg, driving bass rhythms from Dustin Meyer, and the subtle drum backbeats of Richard Knox that make for foot-stomping Americana rock. This is the kind of songwriting that feels directly tied to Austin’s influences, as much at home at Threadgill’s as on Red River.
