Family of the Year
To say that Family of the Year has accomplished a lot in a short amount of time would be an understatement.
The list of artists that FOTY has played with over the years is notable - fun., Mumford & Sons, Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, Walk The Moon, Good Old War, Grouplove, Belle Brigade and Milo Greene - though arguably the most impressive opening gig so far was when the band warmed up a Ben Folds performance with the Boston Pops Orchestra. Handpicked by Folds and Boston Pops conductor Keith Lockhart, Family of the Year beat out 700 other hopeful artists to open the event. Not a bad way to spend your third show ever.
Proving its versatility, the Family has made fans of fellow Massachusetts-bred musicians who, on the surface at least, don’t have much in common, including Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler. Tyler discovered Family of the Year through a mutual connection and compared what he heard to “The Mamas And The Papas on acid.”
But a band is only as good as its most recent output, which is why Family of the Year has positioned itself for success with the recent release of ‘Loma Vista’ (Nettwerk Records). Recorded by what now constitutes the core of FOTY—Joe Keefe (vocals, guitar), Sebastian Keefe (drums, vocals), James Buckey (guitar, vocals), and Christina Schroeter (keyboards, vocals)—the group completed 10 songs with producer Wally Gagel (Wax LTD) at his new studio in Los Angeles.
As a collection, the album is a lively slice of indie, folk- and psych-rock. Four weeks since they saw their Billboard radio chart debut, Family of the Year's standout track "Hero" cracks the Top 5 on the Triple A Top 30 Radio Chart and Top 20 at Alternative Radio (amongst the 5 most added at the format). Family Of The Year has garnered fantastic media support, including TV appearances on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, CONAN and two episodes on Last Call With Carson Daly. Entertainment Weekly includes the band in their “15 New Stars We Love” and CMT (Country Music Television, Inc.) invites the band for an in-studio taping of “Hero.”
What's next? A 2013 North American headline tour with The Mowgli’s.
