Anenon
Despite a childhood steeped in music, Brian Allen Simon only began to appreciate his dad’s records after he developed an obsession with hip hop in his teens and went to college to study music. After an intense love affair with the saxophone, an internship at seminal LA label Alpha Pup and a journey through Music History and Theory at UCLA, Brian landed at the foot of his own label, Non Projects, releasing music from artists such as Asura and Ana Caravelle along with remixes that range from Ghostly’s Shigeto to Julia Holter. He’s no slouch in the studio himself either, and as Anenon has seen his physically and emotionally engaging sounds appear in the form of a split EP with Asura (Non Projects), remixes for artists such as Shlohmo on Error Broadcast, Take on Alpha Pup (one of Daddy Kev’s selected top Alpha Pup tracks) and a standout piece on Brownswood Elctr*c 2, released on Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood imprint. Taking his inspiration from the environment around him as much as the sounds in his own head, Brian can coax an eerie cinematic tension from almost anything.
Utilizing a tenor saxophone for visceral live sampling along with electronics, Anenon’s multifaceted live set has begun to gain notoriety for it’s unique improvisatory approach and enrapturing sounds after a recent run through Europe. His opening set for electronic music legend Morton Subotnick to a sold out crowd in Madrid, Spain’s highly regarded Museo Reina Sofia was named as a top five live set at this year’s Red Bull Music Academy (at which he was a participant), an honor also received by hugely established and influential acts Erykah Badu, Chic, Byetone and Global Communication. Brian has previously shared the stage with such artists as Baths, Gold Panda, Machinedrum, Matthewdavid, Shlohmo, Salva and many more. Anenon’s full length debut ‘Inner Hue’ is due early spring 2012 on Non Projects.
