London trio SYKES make alternative electro-pop championed by Indie Shuffle, NME, Q Magazine and playlisted on national UK radio BBC Radio 1. Their blend of nostalgic synth lines and soaring melodies has got them headlining notable London venues; touring supporting Kodaline, Charli XCX, Bleachers, Andrew McMahon, Against The Current and festival gigs at Glastonbury, Bestival, Isle of Wight, T In The Park and the European Vans Warped Tour.
Formed in a University dorm room, Anglo-Brazilian Julia Sykes (vocals/synth) and London bandmates Will (drums) and Kris (guitar) started producing bedroom demos unconstrained by mainstream sound boundaries. Their raw potential caught the ear of producer Cam Blackwood (George Ezra / London Grammar) who produced SYKES first EP ‘Gold Dust’ . The songs received significant online buzz, and the band went on to sell out a string of London headline shows earning a loyal local fanbase.
Follow-up single ‘Best Thing’ caught the attention of well respected media outlets, with BBC Radio 1 playlisting the track , Q-Magazine ‘ Songs To Hear This Week’ listing, and a London Metro newspaper feature. Hinging on an elastic bass line and a head rush of a chorus, ‘Best Thing’ features Julia’s introspective lyrics that dig deep into the perils of portraying a false image of yourself online.
SYKES’ fledgling success was further accelerated by a chance encounter somewhere on the Florida peninsula where a gig crowd included one Kevin Lyman, better known as the man behind the international juggernaut that is the Vans Warped Tour. A smitten Lyman personally championed the band, which has since borne fruit on both sides of the Atlantic, with SYKES appearing on the UK Warped Tour bill at Alexandra Palace.
SYKES rounded off 2015 by releasing a whip-sharp electronic pop single ‘Chances’; completing a string of sold-out UK/European tour dates with Against The Current and showcasing at New York’s CMJ Music Marathon.
