Adam Langton

Product Manager, Energy Services
BMW Group

In his current role at BMW Group, Adam develops and implements energy and data service products in the U.S. market as part of the Connected eMobility team. Among his noteworthy achievements, Adam has created and launched three energy products that are both financially self-sustaining and provide innovative sustainability benefits. Drawing on his expertise in the energy and utility sector, Adam pioneered groundbreaking partnerships with utilities and energy providers to incorporate renewable energy with EV charging. These products target electric utilities as customers, requiring Adam to navigate complex regulatory environments and foster strategic partnerships. He also established partnerships with other automakers, leading to the launch of joint data products—the first such data partnerships between automakers in the U.S.—which have since become the foundation for a joint venture between three major automotive corporations (BMW, Ford and Honda).
A prime example of Adam’s visionary work is his pioneering partnership with California farms producing renewable energy. Adam created the first power purchase agreement between an automaker and a dairy farm that generates renewable energy through biodigester technology. This “cow-to-car” energy partnership has since expanded to three farms and sparked further investment in renewable energy projects across California, earning recognition from Fast Company as one of the most creative business ideas of 2020.
As a thought leader in charging and energy resources, Adam has also filed 17 patents related to electric vehicle charging and vehicle-grid integration, showcasing his innovative approach to sustainable energy solutions. I am confident that Adam will bring the same ingenuity and dedication to the Global Energy and Sustainability team.
Adam’s expertise also includes substantial regulatory experience at the state level, where he played a leading role in developing California’s electric vehicle (EV) policies. As lead staff for EV policy at the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC), Adam advised Commission leadership on EV policy issues, managed regulatory proceedings, and developed technical reports for stakeholders. Under his guidance, the CPUC established groundbreaking EV regulations that became a model for state regulators across the U.S., defining the utility role in EV adoption. Notably, Adam was the lead technical analyst for the CPUC-NRG settlement—a $100 million charging infrastructure investment, the largest state EV charging initiative of its time. His efforts also helped pioneer vehicle-to-grid testing in California through partnerships with the Department of Defense, and he served as an advisor to the National Institute of Standards and Technology on smart grid standards for EVs.
Beyond his work in California, Adam has federal government experience from his tenure with the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB). In this role, he provided non-partisan program analysis for departments such as Transportation and the General Services Administration, gaining a deep understanding of federal budget rules, regulatory development, and the legislative process.
Adam’s academic journey includes a degree in Economics from Boston College and a master’s degree in energy and environmental policy from UC-Berkeley's Goldman School of Public Policy, where he was awarded an innovation grant for a “payment for environmental services” model to improve water quality in China. He further developed this concept as a Research Fellow with the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing.
