Brian Kopell, MD
Brian H. Kopell, MD is a global authority in neurosurgery and neuromodulation. He serves as Director, the Center for Neuromodulation, and Co-Director of The Bonnie and Tom Strauss Center for Movement Disorders. He revolutionized Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) by pioneering intraoperative imaging, significantly enhancing safety and efficiency, performed the first iMRI DBS case in NYC, and was the first in the world to record dopamine and serotonin in the subgenual anterior cingulate cortex in a human.Dr. Kopell's clinical trials have advanced neuromodulation for Parkinson's disease, tremor, tinnitus, Tourette's syndrome, and major depression. Most recently, his work on the Living Brain Project revealed significant differences in RNA editing between postmortem and living human brain tissues. Dr. Kopell is a Professor of Neurosurgery, Neurology, Neuroscience, and Psychiatry at Mount Sinai Health System. He holds a BA from the University of Pennsylvania and his MD from the NYU School of Medicine. Additionally, he completed his Neurosurgery Residency at the NYU Medical Center, and fellowships in Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery at NYU Medical Center, University Hospital in Zurich, Switzerland, Cleveland Clinic, and University Hospital in Ankara, Turkey. Receiving over 2.5M views on Wired’s “Neurosurgeon Answers Brain Surgery Questions,” Dr. Kopell has contributed to the intersection of medicine, technology, and innovation, and brings a unique perspective as a global authority in neurosurgery and neuromodulation. His work in DBS and expertise in neuromodulation revolutionize treatments for neurological disorders, bridging the gap between clinical practice and technological innovation that transforms lives.
