The Indie Film Annual Legal Update: AI, Fair Use, and More

Mar 8, 2025

11:30am – 12:30pm CT

Chris Perez and his partner Michael Donaldson will be back for another lively (and surprisingly entertaining) update on the many legal developments affecting the indie film community.
The distribution landscape has again changed dramatically since last we were together at SXSW. While the number of buyers for independent films seems to have contracted, numbers show that the theatrical business is alive and well, and films are still getting financed and produced. As usual, indie filmmakers find a way!
Since last year, several legal issues have come to the fore. The hot topic on everyone’s mind is how AI has changed, and will continue to change, the industry. We will explore the ever-evolving legal landscape when it comes to AI.
Fair use continues to be a useful tool for both documentary and scripted filmmakers, so we’ll cover the latest fair use cases affecting filmmakers.
Then there’s the legal questions associated with making films based on or inspired by a true story. We’ve all seen lawsuits spring up from people who claim (or who the Internet claims) that an unsavory character is based on them.
Bring all your burning questions, as these two leaders in the indie industry tend to stay on to help you learn more about anything you need to know.

Programming descriptions are generated by participants and do not necessarily reflect the opinions of SXSW.
