Greg Beets was born in Lubbock, Texas on the day Richard Nixon was elected president. After growing up in Dallas and Houston, he came to Austin in 1987 to attend the University of Texas. From 1992 to 2019, he was a regular contributor to The Austin Chronicle, covering the local underground music scene while occasionally interviewing legends like Herb Alpert and Brian Wilson. Beets has also written for Billboard, Uncut, and Blurt. In 2023, he published his first book, A Curious Mix of People: The Underground Scene of ‘90s Austin (UT Press), with co-author Richard Whymark. In addition to writing, Beets was vocalist for 90s Austin bands Cheezus, Noodle, and the Peenbeets. He currently sings for the Ron Titter Band and spends normal business hours working as a communications analyst.
