With a sensitive gaze, gentle voice and a head of shoulder-length hair, newcomer Chih Siou broke through the clutter decisively in 2019 with his debut album Elephant in the Room. His gender-fluid appearance might initially be intriguing, but the music speaks for itself, with songs that find strength in vulnerability. A record crammed full of delectable, conversational song-writing and a lucid mix of electronic and folk-pop, the mysterious artist uses his persona and music to brilliantly rise above titles and categories. From the structure of his songs, use of various genres, and vocal range, his style fits with acoustic instrumentation and electronic beats. Winner of the Best New Asian Artist at the Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA) held in South Korea, Chih Siou got international recognition and shows the power of being unconventional and proud of it.
