D. Jeffrey Newport, M.D., M.S., M.Div., is a professor and acting associate chair for research in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and professor in the Department of Women’s Health at Dell Medical School. He is also director of the Women’s Reproductive Mental Health clinic at UT Health Austin.

Newport completed a graduate theological degree before receiving his medical degree from the University of South Carolina. He subsequently completed a general psychiatry residency, a research fellowship in biological psychiatry and a master’s degree in clinical research at Emory University.

Newport’s research focuses on: women’s mental health with a particular emphasis on the psychobiology of psychiatric illness and substance use disorders during pregnancy and the postpartum period; the pharmacokinetics of psychotropic medication during pregnancy and lactation; and the persistent neurobiological and behavioral impact of childhood trauma and other early life adverse experiences. His publications have appeared in top journals across numerous specialties including JAMA, American Journal of Psychiatry, American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Neurology, Pediatrics, Biological Psychiatry, Journal of Clinical Psychiatry, Neuropsychopharmacology, Psychological Medicine, Bipolar Disorders, British Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology and others.

His awards include the National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression Independent Investigator and Young Investigator awards; Young Faculty Award from the American Psychiatric Institute for Research and Education; Lilly Fellowship from the Society of Biological Psychiatry; Laughlin Fellowship from the American College of Psychiatrists; Hoechst Marion Roussel Award from the American Society of Clinical Psychopharmacology; Lilly Research Fellowship from the American Psychiatric Association; Pfizer Psychiatry Resident of the Year Award; and the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Distinguished Physician Alumnus Award, in addition to teaching awards from both the University of Miami and Emory University schools of medicine.
