Mina Mileva
Mileva and Kazakova are known as ‘the Demonic Duo’, an epithet given to them by a Bulgarian MP for their internationally acclaimed but subversive documentaries. They endured lengthy institutional harassment and interrogations in their native Bulgaria. International pressure from organizations and publications in Variety helped them survive and continue working.
In 2016 the duo changed direction to producing narrative films internationally. “Cat in the wall” shot in London and offering an unnerving window into Brexit Britain premiered at Locarno film festival in 2019. It can still be seen on HBO and Amazon USA.
Their second fiction “Women do Cry”, starring Oscar nominee Maria Bakalova, is described as a rallying cry and a feminist critique of modern Bulgarian society. It premiered at Cannes’ official selection in 2021. Both films were a part of SXSW Global section and the European Films Academy selection.
