Dr. James Clarkson is an Assistant Professor of Surgery and a practicing Plastic and Hand surgeon, working in Michigan State University. He is Co-Founder of Wide Awake VR and their Chief medical officer. He is a member of the American Society of Plastic surgeons and sits on their Patient Safety and Health Care Delivery Subcommittees. Dr Clarkson worked in the British National Health Service for 12 years before emigrating to the US 14 years ago and brings experience working in the world's largest socialized healthcare system.
He now runs a busy university reconstructive Plastic Surgical practice with a focus on Hand Surgery. He is also Medical Director for the Sparrow Hospital Wound clinic. He takes a keen interest in keeping his patients out of the hospital setting, offering most of his hand surgery and skin grafting in the office setting. For the past 6 years he has been pioneering the use of Virtual Reality to improve the patient experience during awake surgery. He has published trial data and patient outcome studies demonstrating the efficacy of VR for this use case.
