Joseph Wheeler

Professor of Architecture & co-director of the VA Tech Center for Design Research, globally recognized for housing industrialization, environmental sustainability, and technology integration. As leader of VA Tech’s FutureHAUS, Joe has helped student researchers, industry, government, and academic partners explore solutions to the world’s global housing challenges for over 20 years. FutureHAUS guides students in applied research and engages industry partners to make homes smart, efficient, affordable, and sustainable. Areas of expertise include smart home technology; modular and industrialized homebuilding processes; energy efficiency & green homebuilding Innovation; housing accessibility for diverse age groups and aging populations; and engineering of “flex spaces” for smaller homes.
