Is Remote Work a Privilege or a Right?

More and more employers are bringing their employees back to the office, but why? Microsoft's Work Trend Index study from September 2022 showed that 87% of 20,000 surveyed employees said they felt as productive at home, if not more, than in the office, but some employers aren’t seeing the value of remote work. Nearly half of all employed Americans currently work remotely, which raises a host of complicated questions about geographical-aligned or maligned compensation, how DEI efforts can be fueled or hampered by remote work, and other pressing issues shaping the future of work in real time. As powerful bosses, from Elon Musk to Tim Cook, are beginning to weigh in on the debate—sometimes thoughtfully, sometimes forcefully—it’s time for us to take long-term remote work seriously.
