For generations, the ideal of the “American Dream” has represented the ability to work a good job and earn a comfortable income, to afford a nice home to raise a family, and to have the freedom to live the life you want to live — the opportunity for both prosperity and mobility. But as younger generations of Americans continue to face increasing economic inequality and ever-rising costs of housing, education, child care, and more, does the promise of the American dream still exist? Is it still possible to live the life you choose, or are more and more Americans being priced out of having that opportunity? How are local governments, which are closest to the people, fighting back?
