Building the World's Largest Game of Rock, Paper, Scissors with Computer Vision

Mar 13, 2023

10:00am – 11:30am CT

Advance sign-up is required. Online sign up is now open on the SXSW Schedule for Workshops. You will only be able to RSVP for one of these formats in the given time slot. On each event page, select an available time slot to RSVP and it will be added to your personal schedule. There are a limited number of spots available per session, so RSVP today!

Interested in learning about machine learning? Do you love games? Join us for this interactive workshop where we’ll learn to create a computer vision model that can understand if you’re throwing rock, paper, or scissors -- and match you to somewhere else anywhere in the world to compete against them. You’ll deploy the model to a webapp to power what could be the largest rock paper scissors tournament ever (record at the time of this writing: 10,033 participants).

Participants will learn the fundamentals of building production-ready computer vision models, including contributing to a “rock,” “paper,” “scissors” dataset and deploying the trained model to a live application.

By the end of the session, you’ll have experience with machine learning technologies like the latest state of the art models, using web technologies to deploy your model, and experience setting up active learning systems. Even better, you may be crowned the winner of a large tournament.

Computer programming knowledge (like how to call an API) is required; machine learning experience is not necessary. You'll need a laptop for this workshop.

Programming descriptions are generated by participants and do not necessarily reflect the opinions of SXSW.
