mui zyu at The 13th Floor

Date TBA

mui zyu is a Hong Kong British artist creating music focused on cultural displacement and alienation. Her debut EP, 'a wonderful thing vomits' (released via Father/Daughter Records) described as ‘an utterly gorgeous fever dream - equal parts dark & elegant’ by Nylon, presents her cloudy sense of identity having grown up lost between different cultures. Fusing bedroom recordings with traditional Chinese instruments and field recordings mui zyu creates sonic landscapes as a way to unpack, distract and escape from the different worlds she’s found herself in.

On her debut LP 'Rotten Bun for an Eggless Century', Liu utilizes chopped-up soundscapes, delicate industrial ambience and sweet pop melodies to introduce a character––a guide––who can be stretched across worlds to offer the catharsis of patience, perseverance and understanding. This isn’t a character formed from a desire to escape or flee the real world, but rather a way to submerge even deeper into ourselves. 'Rotten Bun for an Eggless Century' is a reflection of everyone, and everything, that made us who we are.
