The Nanocluster project was born out of a Brighton based club night, also called Nanocluster, conceived by Immersion (aka Malka Spigel and Colin Newman of Minimal Compact and Wire respectively). The club features a range of influential and cutting edge music acts. But the unique aspect of the evenings is that each show climaxes with a one off collaboration between Immersion and the headliners. The songs having been written and recorded in the studio, often in the days prior to the performance.
“It could just be a series of performances.” Says Newman. “But the fact that we build the tracks in our studio for the performances means we have everything recorded.” Says Spigel. The recordings are then developed with Immersion heading up production duties.
Collaborators so far have been Tarwater, Laetitia Sadier, Ulrich Schnauss and Scanner and the results released as Nanocluster Vol 1 in 2021.
Vol.2 is now in development - started by recordings in Brighton, Brooklyn with Matt Schulz from Holy Fuck and Tel Aviv with Red Axes. 2023 sees Nanocluster taking its first trip outside of Brighton to Austin TX for a collaboration with the legendary percussionist Thor Harris.
