Tara Roberts
Tara Roberts is a National Geographic Storytelling Fellow. She spent the last few years following, diving with and telling stories about a group of Black scuba divers as they search for slave shipwrecks around the world. Her goal is to reimagine and reframe the origin story of Africans in the Americas and to tell stories that humanize and bring empathy, nuance and complexity to their human journey. Her travels are being turned into a six-part National Geographic-produced narrative podcast called ‘Into the Depths.’ It airs in January 2022. Tara has also worked as an editor for CosmoGirl, Essence, AOL, EBONY and Heart & Soul magazines, edited several books for girls and founded her own magazine for women ‘too bold for boundaries.’ She spent a fulfilling year backpacking solo around the world and interviewing young women changemakers. Her journey led to the creation of an award-winning social enterprise to help fund their big ideas. Additionally, Tara served as a fellow at the MIT Open Documentary Lab, a Director of Communications at Ashoka and a social entrepreneurial coach for Red Bull. She graduated cum laude from Mount Holyoke College.
