Dr. Alexander Moreira-Almeida is Associate Professor of Psychiatry in the Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora (UFJF) School of Medicine, where he has been on faculty since 2006. He founded NUPES, the Research Center in Spirituality and Health in 2006 and is the Chair of the Section on Spirituality of the Latin American Psychiatric Association. His work focuses on the “epidemiology of religion” and several aspects of spiritual experiences. He is a global thought leader and has presented at conferences in 11 countries and received funding from international agencies, including Oxford University, Bial Foundation and Fulbright. Dr. Moreira-Almeida obtained a medical degree at UFJF in 1997 and concluded residency in psychiatry in 2001 with specialization in cognitive-behavioral therapy at the Institute of Psychiatry of the University of São Paulo, where he also obtained his PhD in Health Sciences investigating the clinical differentiation between mental disorders and spiritual experiences.
