Jennifer Kim Penberthy
Dr. J. Kim Penberthy is the Chester F. Carlson Professor of Psychiatry & Neurobehavioral Sciences at UVA’s School of Medicine. She is a board certified clinical psychologist, and studies and implements contemplative practices to help people who suffer from deep mental suffering, addiction and serious life-threatening medical conditions. She is a member of UVA’s Division of Perceptual Studies (DOPS)and a founding member of the UVA Contemplative Sciences Center. She's published extensively on topics, such as states of consciousness, mindfulness, meditation, healing, and fear of death and dying, as well as after death communications. She is the co-author of Living Mindfully Across the Lifespan. Dr. Penberthy received degrees in psychology and biology from Wake Forest University, where she also obtained a master’s degree in experimental psychology. She earned her Ph.D. in clinical psychology at Virginia Commonwealth University and has been on faculty at the UVA Medical school since 2000.
