Lawful, but Awful: Curbing Harmful Content Online
As regulators struggle with how to create rules to reduce harmful content on social media platforms, the tech industry is struggling to make rules that work for a diverse and global internet. However, harmful content such as hate speech, misinformation, bullying and harassment continue to proliferate. Why is this problem so hard to solve? Moderated by Casey Newton of Platformer, the panel includes Dipayan Ghosh of Harvard Law school and author of “Terms of Disservice” as well as two members of the newly created Facebook Oversight Board, Julie Owono of Internet Sans Frontieres and Suzanne Nossel, of PEN America. This panel will look at how companies are defining the issue and what the potential solutions could be to reducing lawful, but awful content online.
