The central location of the book Ready Player One is The OASIS, a fully embodied VR metaverse that began as a game, but was so compelling, so useful and fun that everyone had to have a presence there. Sort of like the formative Internet in the 90s. This is fiction, of course, but in October, 2021, Facebook changed its name to Meta Platforms. They announced an ambitious R&D effort which if successful would result in the world much like the book's. Meta is hardly alone in this ambition. Epic Games (maker of Fortnite) previously announced they are building a metaverse. Nvidia says it is building a Metaverse for business. Who else is building - or has built - a metaverse? How shall we define it? What technology does a metaverse require? What might the terminal form be? On which platforms - AR, VR, Mobile - will these virtual, social spaces manifest, when, and how?
