Documentary filmmakers typically require legal assistance to bring their journalistic and artistic visions to their audiences. Like other journalists, they must comply with laws relating to newsgathering and carefully prepare their films to avoid defamation and privacy issues. Documentarians also must navigate legal issues relating to intellectual property licensing, fair use, and business formation. Because of their modest budgets, however, filmmakers are often unable to secure legal counsel, if at all, until very late in the production process: a less than optimal situation since early legal advice often mitigates problems that may prevent films films from being completed or reaching their full potential. This workshop will address important legal issues to keep projects moving forward.
