Censorship is pervasive in mass media and social media and impacts a brand’s ability to operate on many levels. Using cannabis as a case study, a lack of objective and reliable information, due to restrictions and limited marketing channels available, creates space for stigma to thrive--and it's not just limited to cannabis. Old segments like liquor, and new ones like psychedelics, face the same challenges. By necessity, nascent segments are the most adaptive, versatile, and innovative when it comes to marketing and engaging consumers. But what will it take for restrictions to be lifted and what will brand engagement look like when the playing field is leveled?
