Tom Van de Weghe
Tom is an award-winning investigative journalist and international correspondent for VRT News, the Belgian public broadcaster. As a research fellow at Stanford University he is studying artificial intelligence and focuses on synthetic media, better known as deepfakes. Tom was the bureau chief of VRT News in Washington, D.C from 2012 until 2016, covering major elections and news events in North and South America. Prior to this, he lived and worked 5 years in Asia, where he traveled extensively across the Pacific region (including North Korea) and covered events from the 2008 Olympics to the Sichuan earthquake to civil unrest in Tibet, Myanmar and Thailand and the Fukushima nuclear disaster. He started the first China Bureau for Belgian television and received numerous awards for an investigative documentary about Chinese gambling in European soccer. Tom earned master’s degrees in Slavic philology, communication studies and international politics.
