Genetic Rescue: Can We Intervene for the Planet?

In an era of devastating biodiversity decline, can biotechnology save us? As revealed at the SXSW premiere of “We Are As Gods,” a documentary about the life and work of renowned environmentalist Stewart Brand, a small group called Revive & Restore has set an ambitious goal into motion. Along with scientists, regulators, and conservationists, they’re working toward the genetic rescue of endangered species and to bring the woolly mammoth and passenger pigeon back from extinction. But what is the point? Is it even possible? With panel moderator and New Yorker writer Michael Specter, Revive & Restore co-founders Stewart Brand and Ryan Phelan, and lead de-extinction scientist Ben Novak.
