Twenty years ago, the pioneers of social media first showed up at a tiny conference called SXSW Interactive. Many of them would go on to create some of today’s biggest platforms, but weren’t able to prevent the harms and dangers that came along with social media’s growth. We’ll take a look back at some of the lesser-known people and ideas that helped shape social media and the SXSW community, and what we can learn from them about how to make social media a force for good in the future.
