Consumer Reports (CR) introduced an ambitious plan at SXSW 2017 to test products for data & Security. Now, with an initial $6m investment from Craig Newmark Philanthropies, CR has taken the next step, launching its Digital Lab to seek solutions for the data privacy & security issues we increasingly face. As the world wakes up to the fact that current law hasn’t kept up with innovation and that Big Tech can’t be trusted to police themselves, CR’s Lab examines market competition, transparency, and consumer choice in today’s digital marketplace. CR’s CEO Marta Tellado, along with Craig Newmark, founder of Craigslist, and algorithmic bias expert Cathy O’Neil, will explore the latest Lab findings, from peering into connected products to proposed solutions to protect our safety and choice.
