The Future of Journalism is Freelance Meet Up

Much of the best media we consume is produced by independent investigators, filmmakers and writers working to develop their stories on their own. These freelance reporters are the heart of the new journalism ecosystem, yet often work in isolation, spend their own money on stories, don’t get paid on time, are left without safety or insurance and have few formal support networks. There is a growing organizing and unionization movement happening within newsrooms throughout the country. What strategies have they used? How can freelancers harness this energy to advocate for their rights? What are the unique needs of these independent journalists? How can we work together to restructure the current workplace model and make sure freelancers are provided the support they need? Let's collaborate.
