Much of the best media we consume is produced by independent investigators, filmmakers and writers working to develop their stories on their own. These freelance reporters are the heart of the new journalism ecosystem, yet often work in isolation, spend their own money on stories, don’t get paid on time, are left without safety or insurance and have few formal support networks. There is a growing organizing and unionization movement happening within newsrooms throughout the country. What strategies have they used?
