The Value of Professional Female Athletes
When the USWNT won the 2019 Women’s World Cup, the crowd chanted “Equal Pay!” This complicated, thorny, and frequently misunderstood issue has permeated women’s sports for decades, and more recently has become a part of broader public discourse. Athletes, teams, and leagues have filed lawsuits and launched protests and boycotts, while male counterparts have had a much easier and more linear path. In some ways, the conversation around equal pay reflects the state of women’s sports overall: full of hotly-debated, timely topics that don’t have easy answers. We’ll take a look at all of the various issues that have informed the under-investing in women’s sports over time and potential solutions to help level the playing field.
