Commodification of Personal Data: Who Owns It?

Date TBA

Communities around the world are locked in a debate about the value of personal data - which begs the question: if personal data is so valuable, then who owns it? While individual ownership may sound rational, if you take a dystopian leap and consider personal data like human organs, would establishing an ownership model lead to a two-tiered privacy system, where the rich can afford privacy and everyone else sells their personal data for access to goods and services they can’t otherwise afford? Join us for this critical conversation where we discuss the implications of pending legislative proposals to treat our personal data as a commodity, and explore how to empower consumer control over personal data and whether property principles are a solution.
