It’s been 5 years since the first Amazon Echo launched. While smart speaker device shipments have mirrored the explosive growth of the mobile era, the voice experience lagged mobile’s rapid expansion in capability. In fact, many of today’s voice experiences recall the earlier era of command line computing—limited, unforgiving, and not mass-market friendly. This talk will explore the current state of voice by contrasting it with the mobile app boom and highlight the key factors currently inhibiting voice experiences. It will forecast what it will take from voice to emerge from its current adolescent command line phase.
