Stamping Out Stigma Of Mental Illness In Athletes
Competitive athletes despite their strengths and resilience are just as susceptible to mental illnesses. However, while their physical ailments are readily cared for, their mental maladies are not so much. And unfortunately, the culture of athletes discourages them from seeking help for fear it will be perceived as weakness. The truth is athletes do suffer from mental disorders but too often do not seek or receive care. Fortunately, the stoicism characteristic of athletes is changing as the number of athletes sharing their struggles of mental health problems is growing. These public confessions of mental health struggles have shed light on this dirty little secret of sports. Now is the time for teams, schools, leagues, governing bodies to address this problem.
