Love, Robots, Mars: Becoming an Astronaut
NASA announced a return to the moon in 2024 with project Artemis and commercial spaceflight is becoming a reality. This means an increasing number of people will be able to experience space and astronauts will start to undertake long duration space missions. But what does it take to become an astronaut? The “right stuff” astronauts who are all male fighter pilots are not the type of candidates we need today. Technical skills are still important, but diversity in skills and backgrounds, teamwork, and mental fortitude are even more important as this generation might see the first humans on another planet. I will discuss the things aspiring astronauts and future space explorers can do while still here on Earth and how collaboration and mutual support get us all further.
