James Bellingham is a pioneer in the development of autonomous marine robots. He is the founding director of the Center of Marine Robotics at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI). The Center for Marine Robotics was established in 2012 to speed development of robotic technologies through collaboration with industry sponsors, academic partners, and key government agencies to change the way people and machines work together in the marine environment. Bellingham founded the Autonomous Underwater Vehicles Laboratory at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1988 and co-founded Bluefin Robotics in 1997. He served as director of engineering and chief technologist at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute before coming to WHOI. Bellingham has led and participated in research expeditions around the world from the Arctic to the Antarctic. He has a particular interest in marine robotics entrepreneurship and advises several startups.
