Melanie Shimano is the Director and Founder of the Food Computer Program in Baltimore City Public Schools, the Data Automation & Technology Analyst for Baltimore City's Department of General Services, and a current Baltimore Corps Fellow. Her work focuses on providing meaningful STEM education to Baltimore City students through innovative programming and continuing this understanding of effectively implementing technology when designing solutions to community challenges in her data science role with the City of Baltimore. Melanie was most recently featured as a speaker at SXSW EDU where she lead a session about the importance of using open-source technology in education and aligning these projects with education standards. Her work has been featured in The Baltimore Sun, The Baltimore Mayor's Newsletter, The Johns Hopkins Magazine, and The Johns Hopkins Engineering Magazine, and she has received several grants for her entrepreneurial efforts-most recently a $25,000 award from Constellation Energy Group to continue STEM and Food Systems programming at Green Street Academy. Melanie holds both an M.S. in Engineering Management and a B.S. in Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering from the Johns Hopkins University.
