Gender nonconforming and transgender people face higher rates of poverty, substantial economic discrimination, and barriers to employment. Much of this discrimination stems from standards of “professionalism” that require people to conform to gender norms in order to keep their jobs. What would it mean to undo professionalism as we know it? At what point is the imperative to “be professional” just another disguise for discrimination? How might queering professionalism benefit us all?
