Hemant Taneja is a managing director at General Catalyst. He joined the firm in 2001 and launched its Silicon Valley office in 2011. Hemant’s investment thesis, known as “economies of unscale,” describes the belief that small, tightly focused companies can leverage web services, datasets, and AI to successfully launch and compete against much larger, more established competitors. His current investment portfolio ranges across several industries and includes companies such as ClassDojo, Color Genomics, Digit, Grammarly, Gusto, Fractyl, Fundbox, Livongo Health, Samsara, Snap, Stripe, ThoughtSpot and TuneIn.
In addition to his investments, Hemant serves on the Stanford School of Medicine Board of Fellows, is the co-founder of Advanced Energy Economy, an organization focused on transforming energy policy in America and is a board member of Khan Lab School, a non-profit educational organization. He teaches a course on A.I., Entrepreneurship and Society at Stanford University and is slated to publish his first book, UNSCALED, that explores topics of technology and society in March 2018.
