Matt Heckman

Matt is a Director and Associate General Counsel at Twitter, where he currently manages a team of five total attorneys (including himself) that provides full-service legal support for the company’s video content licensing and monetization efforts as well as its global marketing team. During his almost-5-year tenure at Twitter, he has also supported a variety of other types of media and technology partnerships, including in ad tech, e-commerce, mobile distribution, data licensing and software development.

Prior to Twitter, Matt was a Senior Counsel at Apple, where he led negotiations with major and independent record labels, movie studios and television networks for the music and video content distributed via iTunes and Apple TV. He has also worked as Director of Business & Legal Affairs at a major record label (Warner Bros. Records) and as an associate within the entertainment practices at a number of prominent law firms, where he developed an expertise across the full gamut of both traditional and so-called “new media” music and entertainment transactions. In particular, Matt’s practice during his time at law firm Greenberg Traurig was largely focused on representing digital music services (like Rdio, Slacker and Microsoft’s Zune/Xbox) in their negotiations with the major record labels and music publishers for multi-million dollar, full-catalog licenses.

Matt is a graduate of Harvard Law School, and holds a B.A. in English from Georgetown University. He lives in San Francisco, CA and takes full advantage of the vibrant live music scene there.
