Mark Jacobson
Mark R. Jacobson is currently an Associate Teaching Professor at the Edmund A Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University. Previously Jacobson has served in a number of roles in the U.S. government and at international organizations including as a Senior Advisor to the Secretary of Defense, a Special Assistant to the Secretary of the Navy, a Professional Staff Member at the U.S. Senate Committee on Armed Services, and as the Deputy NATO Senior Civilian Representative in Afghanistan. In this latter role Jacobson advised Generals David Petraeus and Stanley McChrystal on the international political dynamics of the mission. Jacobson has served in both the U.S. Army and the U.S. Navy as a reservist and mobilized on active duty to Bosnia (1996) and Afghanistan (2006). As an academic Jacobson focuses on military and diplomatic history with a focus on political warfare and propaganda, as well as the politics of U.S. national security policy. He was also one of the first to warn of the dangers of non-armed and cyber attacks as a strategic weapon in 1998 with the publication of “War in the Information Age: International Law, Self-Defense, and the Problem of ‘Non-Armed’ Attacks, “ in the Journal of Strategic Studies.J Jacobson makes frequent appearances on cable and broadcast outlets and is published or quoted in print and online publications. Jacobson holds degrees from the University of Michigan, King’s College, University of London and a PhD in Military History from The Ohio State University. He is a life member of the Council on Foreign Relations, a Senior Advisor to the Truman National Security Project and a member of the Board of Advisors to Veterans in Global Leadership non-profit devoted to training and preparing veterans to be tomorrow’s global leaders.
