Tempest van Schaik
Tempest is a South African-born, London-based engineer and scientist with degrees in Electrical Engineering, and Biomedical Engineering from Wits University, Johannesburg. Her PhD in Bioengineering at Imperial College London focused on medical sensor technology. She has experience in the end-to-end development of tech to improve health, from basic and applied scientific research at the lab bench, to product development and user-experience. Her research at Science Practice focuses on mobile diagnostic devices and data, from the low-tech (disposable tests) to the hi-tech (machine learning and wearables). She has exhibited her art and design internationally, and brings this creativity into her engineering projects. She is the inventor of SoilCards which are soil-tests for smallholder farmers, as well tests in CognitionKit which test cognition and mood on mobile devices. She has innovated in diverse areas such as electronics, chemistry, medicine and oceanography.
Tempest will be representing Science Practice at SxSW 2018, but has recently joined Microsoft as a software engineer in applied AI.
