Emmy-Nominated Filmmaker

Sonja O’Hara is an Emmy-nominated, queer, Canadian filmmaker represented by VERVE Talent & Literary Agency and Gotham Group. She was selected as a “Filmmaker To Watch” by Independent Magazine. (Past recipients include Moonlight’s Barry Jenkins and Dear White People’s Effie T. Brown.) This Fall, Sonja is set to direct Harvey Keitel, Rita Moreno, and Udo Kier in the upcoming psychological thriller, Theirs. Past feature directing credits include Lionsgate’s Mid-Century (starring Bruce Dern, and Stephen Lang), and Root Letter (starring Danny Ramirez of Top Gun - Maverick) written by Tribeca Film Festival winner David Ebeltoft. As the creator of the Shudder Limited Series Doomsday (Shudder), Sonja was nominated for the Emmy Award for Best Daytime Fiction Program. Sonja is developing her next genre movie, Cottagecore, with producer Peter Phok (Pearl, X, MaXXXine). The screenplay is currently trending on The Black List. After selling her series, Astral, to Adaptive Studios, Sonja spoke on a SXSW Panel entitled, “Going Episodic: Indie TV from Concept to Sale”, which was profiled by NoFilmSchool.com as a “Not To Miss Film Panel” Additionally, Sonja is a festival alumnus and past cast member of the Grand Jury Prize winning feature, Creative Control. Sonja has spoken at festivals around the world, including SeriesFest, New York Television Festival, HollyShorts, etc, and led the “How Genre Opens Doors For Underrepresented Artists” presentation at AMC’s Stareable Festival. She is a member of the Film Fatales.
