Amy Grondin
Amy Grondin is a commercial fisherman based in Port Townsend, WA. She owns Duna Fisheries, LLC with her business partner and husband Greg Friedrichs. Together they catch salmon off the coast of Washington and Alaska. Grondin likes to say her blue collar is green and believes catching fish is not just job it’s a way of life. The fish they catch are caught on hooks, one at a time, allowing them to release fish that are too small to keep or not the target species, thus minimizing their impact on the marine food web.
When not on the water, Grondin works in Commercial Fisheries Outreach with a focus on sustainable food systems. Her work brings together fishermen and marine scientists in collaborative research partnerships that yield powerful solutions to ocean challenges. With a knack for herding people she also plans events that bring together local seafood and landfood producers with chefs, distributors and the media such as the seven past Farmer-Fisher-Chef Connection (F2C2) conferences hosted by FORKS (Fields, Oceans, Ranches, Kitchens, Stewards), and all fifteen of the Annual Washington Troll Salmon Lunches at Lark. Both events are hosted annually in Seattle.
Grondin believes that fishermen have a lot to teach chefs and eaters. She is working to build relationships from boat to plate and promotes the idea that choosing sustainable seafood is both good for the ocean and good for dinner.
