The first beauty salon a young girl is introduced to is between her mother’s legs. It’s a place where innocence is treasured, bonds are strengthened and confidence is boosted. “Brian and Charles” tells the story of an unlikely friendship forged in isolation. After a particularly harsh winter Brian goes into a deep depression; completely isolated and with no one to talk to Brian does what any sane person would do when faced with such a melancholic situation, he builds a robot. Charles is that robot. While life is pretty rosy for a while, tensions begin to rise between pair. Partly due to the fact that Charles has the cognitive ability of a 4 year old child and completely due to the fact that he keeps eating Brians cabbages. Things soon come to a head and Brian is forced to make a decision he may soon come to regret. When Lauren and Bill's 14-year-old daughter says she's going to her first dance with her classmate Ryan, they welcome the news with excitement...and hesitation. Lauren and Bill always assumed their daughter was gay, in the same way that most parents assume their child is straight (until given notice). Suddenly, they worry they have not provided an open environment that allows their daughter to be herself. Lauren and Bill do some introspection on their own parenting and ask, "Are we good parents?" Set in the height of summer in Sydney, Australia, ‘Tangles and Knots’ follows a unique, intimate relationship between a mother and teenage daughter. They act more like girlfriends together than parent and child. This relationship becomes threatened when the mother helps her daughter throw a house party to impress new, more popular friends. As their relationship unravels throughout the night, a much more sinister threat emerges that will jeopardize their bond forever.
