Wagner Moura

Actor

Wagner Moura, widely considered one of South America’s most popular actors, starred for two seasons as Pablo Escobar in the hit Netflix's series “Narcos.” His performance garnered critical praise worldwide including "prize-worthy” (The New York Times), “a masterpiece of charismatic ambiguity” (Rolling Stone), “a gorgeous performance… grand, monstrous … an A” (Esquire) along with a Golden Globe Award nomination.

Moura’s film career began to take off when he was cast in Walter Salles’ “Behind the Sun.” In 2007’s “Elite Squad,” he was put on the world stage when the film won the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival. In 2010, the film’s sequel “Elite Squad 2: The Enemy Within,” went on to top the box office in his native country of Brazil.

Moura is currently guest-starring in Prime Video’s “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” and will star this April alongside Kirsten Dunst and Cailee Spaeny in the A24 film “Civil War,” for Director Alex Garland. He is currently shooting the AppleTV+ crime drama series “Sinking Spring” for Director and Executive Producer Ridley Scott.

A true chameleon, Moura has portrayed the edgy revolutionary ‘Spider,’ in Neill Blomkamp’s “Elysium,” a short-fused gangster in Heitor Dhalia’s “Bald Mountain,” a charismatic gay lifeguard who becomes involved with a German tourist in Karim Anouz’s “Praio Do Futuro,” and a con artist who assumed multiple identities in the fact-based comedic feature “VIPs.” In 2014, Moura starred opposite Rooney Mara and Martin Sheen in the Working Title feature film “Trash,” Stephen Daldry’s crime thriller set in the favalas of Rio de Janeiro. He recently lent his voice to the critically acclaimed animated feature “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, was seen in the Netflix film “The Gray Man” for The Russo Brothers and starred in the AppleTV+ metaphysical thriller series “Shining Girls” opposite Elisabeth Moss.

Wagner starred in the Netflix feature film “Sergio,” for director Greg Barker, which premiered at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival. The film follows Sergio Vieira de Mello’s diplomatic career in Brazil. Moura’s additional feature film credits include “Wasp Network” starring alongside Ana de Armas, Penélope Cruz, Edgar Ramírez and Gael García Bernal for director Olivier Assayas. The film, which premiered at the 2020 Toronto Film Festival and was acquired by Netflix, depicts the story of five Cuban political prisoners imprisoned by the United States in the late 1990s on charges of espionage and murder. Moura’s feature directorial debut “Marighella,” which chronicles the struggle of Brazilian politician and activist Carlos Marighella, premiered at the 2019 Berlinale Film Festival and travelled the international film festival circuit. The film remains a political flashpoint and lightning rod of controversy in Moura’s home country of Brazil.

Moura has served as an advocate in Brazil for laws and political campaigns working to help end forced labor, which was followed by The United Nations’ International Labor Organization’s three year appointment to work with the agency to draw attention to end forced labor worldwide. Moura kicked off his appointment by launching the ILO’s “50 for Freedom” campaign asking nations to ratify the protocol of the 1930 Forced Labor Convention.

Moura grew up in the small town of Rodelas, Bahia with his mother Alderiva, father José and younger sister Lediane. Moura and his spouse of over 15 years, Sandra Delgado, an acclaimed Brazilian photographer and documentarian, reside in Los Angeles with their three young sons.
