Athena Kalkopoulou
Athena Kalkopoulou is a film producer and consultant with over fifteen years of experience in film production, publicity and film festivals. For six years she oversaw the San Francisco Film Society's fiscal sponsorship & documentary grants program, where she worked with filmmakers nationwide, helping them fund raise, produce and carry out outreach efforts for their projects. She is the producer of The Untitled McCloskey Project directed by Alix Blair (in production), and the co-producer of the birth documentary Of Woman Born directed by Scott Kirschenbaum (in post-production) & Jabulile Learns to Fly, a look at women’s rights in post-apartheid Johannesburg directed by Sarah Gross (in post-production). She has been a reviewer in grant review panels (both documentary and narrative) and has participated in panels, pitching forums, juries and industry meetings in festivals such as SXSW, Sundance, Camden International Film Festival and Ashland Film Festival. Prior to moving to the US in 2007, she worked as a publicist in Athens, Greece for ODEON, one of the main film distribution companies in Southern Europe, where she publicized releases from 20th Century Fox, Fox Searchlight, Focus Features, Wild Bunch and Pathe, amongst others. She has worked for film festivals in Greece, Germany and Italy. She has an MA in Film & TV Production from Bristol University in England, and began her career as a production coordinator for advertising and television, including two documentary productions for the French-German ARTE.
