The explosion of visual media requires new thinking about how to understand its context and meaning. We’re seeing great strides in image recognition software, but this can only solve part of the problem. It’s essential to include the intent of the creator (why did I shoot and send this photo?) and the circumstances at the time (what is happening nearby?) along with curation practices.
