While commended for its forward thinking, Silicon Valley is dangerously dated in its views on gender equality. And, despite efforts by several companies to change internal views, the Valley’s long-standing identity as a “brogrammer’s haven” symbolizes a community too far ingrained in its existing culture to enact quick change. But a city like Austin, with its growing tech scene & abundance of female executives, is ripe to solve the gender disparity issue & serve as an industry example. Let’s explore how companies (particularly those in male-dominated industries) can inspire change at a company level, & how growing cities like Austin can scale initiatives to the national & industry-wide level

Aaron Burcell is the VP of Growth & Product Marketing at Vevo, having joined the company in early 2014 after a successful run aggregating millions of mobile millennials at Grockit (acquired by Kaplan), Outspark (acquired by Gamigo) and Gazillion Entertainment. Aaron has managed all aspects of product, brand and corporate marketing in the past, but he is currently expanding the traditional role of digital marketing in product development at Vevo, a mission he started whilst at Learnist, a pioneer in Lean Startup development. With broad growth responsibilities, Aaron is anchored in Vevo’s San Francisco office where the company’s product and technology leadership resides. As CEO for WP Engine, Heather has steered the company to hyper-growth and global expansion with offices in Austin, San Antonio, London and San Francisco serving 40,000 customers in 133 countries. A 25-year technology veteran, Heather helped create billions in value, driven customer success and led business strategy for both privately-funded new ventures and Fortune 500 companies. Heather served as COO of Bazaarvoice (NASDAQ: BV), seeing all stages of early, rapid global growth, through to IPO and two acquisition integrations. She also helped increase the number of global brands the company served with over 850 brands across 36 countries including Best Buy, Blue Shield of California, Costco, Dell and Macy’s among others. Before Bazaarvoice, Heather served as President and CEO of Nuvo, a wholly owned subsidiary of Trilogy, and COO for B-Side (acquired by Slated), a privately funded entertainment technology company. She has held other executive management roles at leading technology companies, including Coremetrics (acquired by IBM), Trilogy, Concero, Oracle and Accenture.
Heather holds a bachelor's degree in international economics from Trinity University. The Austin Business Journal awarded her “Best CEO” in 2015 and a Profiles in Power “Woman of Influence” in 2010. In 2015, WP Engine was named a top workplace in Austin, Texas by the Austin American-Statesman as well as a top place to work by the Austin Business Journal. Heather was judge for the 2013 and 2014 E&Y Entrepreneur of the Year awards for Central Texas. She is also currently an angel investor, start-up advisor and Partner at the Capital Factory. Heather is an active, decade-long volunteer with the Capital Area United Way, serving on its board of directors and strategic programs committee. She also serves as a board director for the Entrepreneurs Foundation and Bazaarvoice Foundation.

Sara has more than 30 years of marketing, strategy, and leadership experience with industry-leading organizations. Before joining Bazaarvoice, Sara served as CEO of InReach, a provider of online continuing education management solutions, a role preceded by her tenure as chief marketing officer for Convio. Sara began her career with Hewlett-Packard before joining Quantum Corporation, where she held a number of roles including vice president, Marketing for the Network Attached Storage Division.
Active in the Austin community, Sara serves as vice chairman of the board of directors for Girlstart and is an adjunct professor in The Bill Munday School of Business at St. Edwards University. She is a graduate of the University of California, Davis, and also earned an MBA from The Amos Tuck School of Business Administration at Dartmouth College.Hide the rest
